It was only the early 1970s that the first backpackers traveling on a coconut boat arrived on Koh Samui. For years after the island just had a few bungalows and a trickle of travelers. In the early 1990s, boats full of tourists started arriving, and since then the island has soared in popularity. Koh Samui is now the most popular island destination in Thailand and it is an oasis of natural beauty, with its white sandy beaches, dazzling corals, luscious lagoons, picturesque waterfalls, swaying coconut trees and crystal clear water. Lamai Beach, situated a couple of bays to the south of Koh Samui’s most famous beach, Chaweng, has long been considered the latter’s poor cousin. The beach isn’t as long, the off-white sand isn’t as fine and the restaurants and bars lack the range and quality of those on Chaweng. (more…)

Bang Po Beach is located on the northwest corner of Koh Samui, between Maenam and Nathon Town, northwest and removed from the most popular tourist areas. This quiet stretch of beach is often visited by local youngsters and recreational fishermen. (more…)
